He has worked on the Anxiety NZ Helpline in a number of roles, contributing across service delivery, volunteer supervision, training, research and program development. Sangwoo has been a Supervisor on the Anxiety NZ Helpline since 2020, most recently serving as the Helpline Lead Supervisor. In recognition of his contributions to the sector, he was the runner-up for the New Zealand Ministry of Health award in 2022.
In addition to his background in Psychology (BSc), Clinical Supervision (Level 5 NZQA qualification in Supervision Skills) and Psychiatry (MBMSc), he has worked in the mental health sector for a number of years across both community and acute mental health services, as well as extensively within the corrections and justice sectors across New Zealand and Australia.
Sangwoo is interested innovative approaches that prevent the development of mental ill-health and violence, with a focus on understanding the psychological mechanisms that contribute to anxiety and harmful behavioural patterns, and is passionate about ensuring helpline callers receive support that is high-quality, accessible, compassionate, evidence-informed, and meaningful for those who reach out for support.
