Overview
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects people across all ages, cultures and backgrounds. ADHD can show up in different ways and is often associated with differences in how people regulate attention, energy and executive functioning.
People with ADHD may experience challenges with:
sustaining or directing attention
starting, stopping or completing tasks
organisation and planning
impulse control
managing time, sleep or emotional regulation
Historically, ADHD was more often identified in childhood. With improved understanding, many adults now recognise that lifelong patterns of difficulty may be related to ADHD, sometimes for the first time. For some people, this insight comes after years of navigating work, study or relationships without a clear explanation.
Developing a clearer understanding of both strengths and areas of challenge can be empowering. An assessment can help identify whether ADHD is present and what supports, strategies or treatments may be helpful moving forward.
Anxiety New Zealand offers a limited number of adult ADHD assessments for people aged 25 years and older.
Assessments are available:
In person at our St Lukes clinic, Auckland
Online (for eligible clients)
A full ADHD assessment requires completion of both Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 is always completed first. The pathway is the same for people who are or have been clients with Anxiety NZ previously.
What to Expect
We aim to provide timely ADHD assessments and avoid people joining long waitlists. For this reason, we can confirm our current timeframe before you complete a referral, so you can decide if we are the right service for you.

Once you enquire, the typical steps are:

Is this ADHD Assessment Service Right for Me?
This service may be a good fit if you:
are aged 25 years or older
have ongoing concerns about attention, organisation, impulsivity, time management, or task initiation that impact daily life
want a structured assessment pathway that may include a psychiatric review and discussion of medication options where appropriate
can complete questionnaires and provide supporting information, including an observer form (someone who knows you well)
are comfortable meeting online or attending our St Lukes clinic (depending on what is recommended and available)
This service may not be the best fit if you:
are under 25 (we are not currently able to assess children, young people, or young adults)
need an urgent mental health assessment or crisis support (contact emergency services, your GP, or local crisis teams)
require formal reports for court, workplace, academic accommodations, or immigration
are seeking assessment specifically for autism, learning disabilities, dyslexia, dyscalculia, or cognitive testing (we can suggest other pathways where appropriate)
mainly need help with executive functioning strategies rather than diagnostic assessment (therapy or coaching may be a better starting point)
If you are unsure, email adhd@anxiety.org.nz and we can advise whether our assessment pathway is likely to meet your needs.
Equity and Access
We recognise that access to assessment and diagnosis has not been equitable, and that many people face barriers including cost, availability, culture and stigma. Our ADHD assessment service has limited capacity, so we may not be able to offer appointments to everyone who enquires. We aim to offer a fair and respectful process, and where our service is not the right fit or is not available, we will support you with information and suggested next steps. We welcome people of all backgrounds and are committed to providing a service that is mana enhancing, culturally safe, and inclusive.
